Last year's holiday left you using a ton of half-full bottles, and they are generally all present in that cupboard below your bathroom sink. Question is, you ought to if they've gone bad? We go to cosmetic dermatologist, Dr Mervyn Patterson from Woodford Medical, to learn - forever - is there a deal with sun cream going bad? How long should it last? And most importantly, can you be sure if it's expired? |

The indicators to look for, are smell and texture. If your sun-protection has expired the formula can have 'started to separate'. "If it's looking different with regards to texture or smell from the time you first bought, then things is probably not well while using product. In this case, make sure you simply discard."

Short version? It's pretty likely you'll burn along with the formula itself could trigger a reaction from the skin. "If a sunscreen product has deteriorated, then in principle there is a probability of chemical improvement in the ingredients." And just what does this mean? Well, you will find there's greater odds of 'contact reactions' while using tan skin, which implies it could be irritating. There will also be a 'fall in protection from the sun', hence the burning. Ouch.

Most sun creams are already designed to withstand a whole lot, "however in the event the containers are still in sunshine even the most stable of formulations can degrade." Dr Patterson continues, "storage is essential. Leaving your sunscreen baking bright day, whether it's around the beach, maybe in the back window within your car, may trigger degradation in the formula, which renders the merchandise useless." The best place to save it? Somewhere shaded, preferably cool and dry.
So now we all know what to complete (and what never to do) to present our SPF the longest life possible... Just remember, if uncertain chuck the earlier stuff and acquire a new bottle - could sun cream may be pretty pricey, however it is worth protecting skin no matter what.
